"Hypnosis has proved successful for women preparing for childbirth because it allows them to get in touch with their natural ability to give birth….Hypnosis can be used to help a woman relax and work with her body during this completely natural process. "

Because pregnancy is a time often both of joy and fear, Hypnotherapeutic work for childbirth involves interviews with both the prospective mother and father to assess the meaning of pregnancy, the availability of suitable support, and other issues that may lead to negative expectations for the pregnancy and the birth. If there are negative expectations, modalities such as regression and parts therapy may be used. Regression-to-Positive-Experiences as a resource for the day of birth may be used with either or both parents-to-be. Pain control sessions for the mother should start once she knows she is pregnant and continue for about 10 sessions right to the time of birth. Self-hypnosis can be taught to both parents and be used with suggestions to reduce stress and expect a normal, healthy pregnancy and delivery.
